Design Standards and Guidelines for Revere Beach Boulevard and Ocean Avenue

Shadley Associates recently completed work to develop Design Standards and Guidelines for Revere Beach Boulevard and Ocean Avenue for the MA Department of Conservation and Recreation.  Many mixed-use and multi-unit residential developments along Ocean Avenue, both recently completed and under construction, will introduce thousands of more people to this historic Reservation, putting immense pressure on the roadway, pedestrian and multi-modal infrastructure and spaces.  Revere Beach is America’s first public beach, and the historic reservation was designed by renowned Landscape Architect Charles Eliot in 1896.  Threatened by over-use, aging infrastructure, harsh coastal conditions, and sea level rise, the Design Standards & Guidelines provide a uniform and cohesive streetscape design that offers generous pedestrian spaces, elevated bike lanes, green infrastructure improvements, and consistent street furniture, lighting, and native coastal planting.  In addition, the design includes traffic calming measures and considers climate resiliency for this historic oceanfront reservation.
