Long Island Recovery Campus Master Plan

Shadley Associates (SA) provided landscape architectural planning services to Gensler and a large multidisciplinary team to develop the Long Island Recovery Campus Master Plan.  The site is about 35 acres in size and on an island off the coast of Boston which is part of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area. The buildings on the island had many previous uses, and were used as a recovery center and homeless shelter until 2014, when the bridge connecting the island to the mainland was closed and later demolished.

Working as the landscape architect for this planning project, tasks included developing strategies for recovery care at the Long Island site.  The architect and recovery specialists developed programs for existing and new buildings, and SA designed the site to support universal access, service, outdoor classrooms and recreational spaces.

The Site Program includes vehicular areas such as entrance drives, parking, dropoff and maintenance/service areas, and connections with other areas of the island.  Pedestrian areas include outdoor patios near dining areas or building entrances, healing gardens, pedestrian connections between buildings and open spaces, a fitness loop, walkways and overlooks that take advantage of the coastline, and site areas that anticipate coastal storms and stormwater solutions.  The Master Plan was completed in January 2021 under a previous municipal administration.
