Shadley Associates began work in February, 2025 on the renovation of Bellingham Square, which is located in the heart of downtown Chelsea at City Hall on Broadway, Washington Avenue and City Hall Avenue. The City asked Shadley Associates to update concept designs and integrate the municipally-funded work into the MassDOT Downtown Broadway Project. Starting at back-of-sidewalk, Shadley Associates worked with the Broadway engineers to integrate new entrances to City Hall with stone retaining walls, stone pavement, curbing, and shade trees and low-maintenance plant material. Work also includes a fire-pull box, water bubbler, drainage and signage, plus incorporation of soil-protection requirements by the licensed site professional (LSP).
The Phase II Broadway work includes adding MassDOT and MBTA improvements for a half mile, including bus and bike lanes, intersection safety improvements and signalized intersections. The completion of these improvements advances key goals of the 2018 City of Chelsea Re-imagining Broadway Plan, which rethinks the traffic and circulation of the Downtown Chelsea area with the goals of improving access, safety, and mobility for everyone. Shadley Associates is preparing Landscape Plans including new and replacement tree plantings for Broadway. The 100% submission was made to MassDOT in June of 2026, and bid/construction will be in 2027.
