Pope Park - Bankside Grove
Pope Park is a historic park that was originally designed by Olmsted Brothers Landscape Architects, working for Colonel Albert Pope, who donated 91 acres to the City for the workers of his bicycle factory to enjoy. Shadley Associates has been working with the Friends of Pope Park, the Pope Hartford Designated Fund, the city of Hartford, and an active community on the phased implementation of the Pope Park Master Plan over the last fifteen years. Current work includes a Master Plan for Bankside Grove, part of the park that connects the main open space with Pope Park North, or Baby Pope. The Master Plan proposes an important link in the Park River Greenway, a multiuse trail, and a walkway system through this sloped and forested site that takes advantage of connections, views and topography. Future improvements at Bankside Grove will include improved pathways, seating areas, a community garden, bioswales and rain gardens, and an extensive rejuvenation of a landscape that has been neglected in recent decades.
