Working with the University of New Hampshire architects and planners and civic leaders from the Town of Durham, Shadley Associates was part of a multi-disciplinary team to improve Main Street. Running through the heart of the UNH campus, Main Street was overly-wide, leading to ambiguous traffic patterns and extended pedestrian crossings. New traffic calming initiatives reduced pavement width, increased safety at pedestrian crossings, added bike lanes and bus facilities, improved signage and lighting, and added new plant material. Walkways encourage use of the designated pedestrian crossings and connect primary destinations. This collaborative effort improved safety and aesthetics for this important route through the middle of the Durham campus, and met State of NH DOT required standards.
